Laptop sizes are measured across the screen diagonally, so a "14-inch" laptop isn't 14 inches wide. What decides whether it fits a bag is the width and depth of the laptop's body, plus whatever case it's in. Measure the body, add about 1 cm on each side if it's in a sleeve, and compare that with the bag's laptop compartment, not the bag's outside size.
How to measure your laptop
- Close it and measure the width (left to right) and depth (front to back) in centimetres.
- If you keep it in a sleeve or case, measure with that on.
- Check the bag's laptop compartment size or stated laptop size. The outside dimensions include the leather, lining and padding, so they're always bigger.

16-inch laptop in a 15-inch bag? Usually not. Laptop sizes are the screen measured corner to corner, not the body. A MacBook Pro 16" is 35.6 cm wide, wider than most 15-inch compartments, so look for a bag or sleeve rated for 16 inches, or check the inside width in cm with the laptop fit checker.

A sleeve or a bag?
