Every Emery piece is made from vegetable-tanned leather from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group. Here is what that means for the bag or wallet you carry, and how the leathers we use differ.
Vegetable-tanned
The hides are tanned with plant extracts rather than chromium salts. It takes longer, and the leather starts out firm, then darkens and softens the more you use it. Small marks from daily handling blend in over the months, so a cognac wallet in its second year looks warmer than it did on day one.
LWG-certified tanneries
The Leather Working Group audits tanneries on water use, energy, chemical management and traceability. All the leather in our range comes from tanneries that pass that audit.
Calf leather
A fine, quiet grain that keeps clean lines. We use it on the Prestige Briefcase and the Astrid Tote, where the shape should do the talking.
Chèvre (goat) leather
A pebbled grain you can feel, light and hard-wearing for its weight. Used on the Alden Wallet Chèvre, the Alden Card Case and the Phone Bag.
Pebbled and smooth cow leather
Pebbled cow leather hides small marks well, which is why it is on the pieces that live in pockets and bags: the Victoria wallets, the City Bag, the Nina Pouch and the Voyager Travel Pouch. Cowhide is also used on the Prestige Belt and the Voyager Travel Wallet and Folio, and the Alden Wallet comes in a smooth finish.
Inside
Most of our wallets and pouches are lined in leather, so the inside wears as well as the outside. The bags have a lined interior (Prestige, Astrid), a soft fibre lining (City Bag) or twill cotton (Aegis folio). Each product page lists its lining.
Looking after it
Keep it out of long direct sun in the car, wipe off water with a dry cloth, and condition it once or twice a year. Our leather care guide covers the rest, and Calf vs Chèvre compares the two side by side. Every piece is covered by our lifetime warranty.
