Example: You carry a 14-inch laptop to the office every day. The Astrid's compartment is made for 13 inches, so it's not your bag. Lundi Paris (13 to 14-inch) fits it, and so do Maverick & Co. and Grams28 (16-inch). Kaizer, Nappa Dori, Ryoko and Carl Friedrik don't state a laptop size, so ask them before you order.

Our Astrid Tote is vegetable-tanned calf leather from LWG-certified tanneries, which softens and darkens as you use it. It has its own 13-inch laptop compartment, a large zip compartment, 3 small inside pockets and an outside slit pocket, weighs 1 kg and comes in Camel or Black, with free delivery across the GCC. Where others win: it takes a smaller laptop than Maverick & Co., Grams28 or Lundi Paris, it's heavier than the Manhattan, it has long shoulder straps only (no detachable strap), and we're online only.

The 185 is the big one: a padded slot for a 16-inch laptop, eyewear and water-bottle slots, tiered inside pockets, magnetic snaps and a luggage pass-through so it rides on a suitcase handle. The Manhattan is the lowest price and the lightest, a structured saffiano tote with a padded 16-inch laptop compartment, a slot for A4 papers or a tablet, mesh, zip and slip pockets, 2 pen slots and a bottle slot. Nappa Dori
The Cassidy is a large tote that doubles as an overnight bag, with top handles, a removable long strap, a magnetic front pocket and herringbone lining, in tan. Ryoko

How do you choose a leather tote for work?
- Start with your laptop. Measure it, then match it to the size the brand states. "Fits a laptop" with no size isn't an answer.
- Weigh what you carry. A tote sits on one shoulder. Add your laptop to the bag's own weight (0.83 kg to 1.8 kg here) and think about the walk from the car park.
- Look at the straps. Owners' most common complaint about totes is thin straps digging into the shoulder once a laptop is in. A detachable shoulder strap (Kaizer, Maverick & Co., Nappa Dori) gives you a second way to carry it.
- Read the warranty and returns. Strap joints are where totes wear first. Here warranties run from not stated to lifetime, and returns from 14 to 100 days.
Check before you buy: the laptop size on the product page itself; the bag's weight; whether there's a zip or magnetic closure for the metro or a crowded mall; how many inside pockets you actually need; and how many days you have to return it.
