Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide with its natural surface left intact. Nothing is sanded off, so it keeps the tightly packed fibres that make leather strong. It's the most durable grade, it breathes, and it develops a patina, a richer colour and soft sheen, the more you use it. Top-grain has had that surface sanded and refinished. "Genuine leather" is a lower layer, and bonded leather is made from scraps.
The four grades, from best to lowest
1. Full-grain. The whole top layer, as it came from the hide. You can see pores, small creases and the odd natural mark. Those are proof the surface hasn't been altered, not flaws. It's the strongest and longest-lasting grade. It also costs the most, because only the best hides can be used without correction.
2. Top-grain. The top layer again, but sanded to remove marks, then sprayed with a finish and often embossed with an artificial grain. It looks very even and resists stains at first. The sanding removes the strongest fibres, though, and the coating stops the leather breathing or ageing well. Over time it tends to crack rather than patina.
3. "Genuine leather". It sounds like a guarantee, but in the trade it usually means split leather: a lower layer of the hide, under the grain, that's coated and embossed to look like the top. It's real leather, but weaker and much shorter-lived.
4. Bonded leather. Leather scraps and fibres glued together onto a backing and coated. It's cheap and peels within a year or two of regular use. Some countries don't allow it to be sold as plain "leather".
| Full-grain | Top-grain | Genuine (split) | Bonded | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Natural, pores visible | Sanded, coated | Coated, embossed | Coated scraps |
| Strength | Highest | Good | Low | Very low |
| Ages into | Patina | Wear, cracking | Peeling | Peeling |

How to tell full-grain leather in a shop
- Look closely. Real pores and small irregular marks mean full-grain. A perfectly uniform, plastic-looking surface is usually corrected or coated.
- Press it. Full-grain wrinkles gently and naturally under your thumb. Coated leather stays flat or creases sharply.
- Check the edges. Cut edges should show dense, tight fibres. A visible layer of fabric or foam points to bonded leather.
- Smell it. Full-grain smells rich and natural. A chemical or plastic smell suggests heavy coatings.
- Read the label. Brands that use full-grain say so plainly. "Made with genuine leather" with no grade is a hint.
Does tanning matter?
Yes. It's the second half of quality. Chrome tanning is faster and gives soft, colour-fast leather that handles water well. Vegetable tanning uses plant tannins, takes weeks, and gives firmer leather that darkens more with age. Neither is "better". It depends on the look and feel you want. What matters more is the tannery. LWG (Leather Working Group) certification means it's audited on water, chemicals and waste.
What Emery uses
Every Emery bag and wallet is made from full-grain leather from LWG-certified tanneries: - Calf leather with a smooth, refined surface, on the Prestige Briefcase and the Astrid Tote. - Chèvre (goat) leather, with a fine natural grain and great scratch resistance, on the Alden wallets and card case. The Phone Bag uses vegetable-tanned goat leather. - Pebbled leather, full-grain with a raised texture that hides daily scuffs, on the City Bag.
That's why each piece carries a lifetime warranty. For the difference between calf and goat, read calf vs chèvre leather.
Quick answers
Is full-grain leather better than genuine leather?
Yes. Full-grain is the top, strongest layer of the hide with its natural surface intact. "Genuine leather" usually means a lower split layer that's been coated, so it's weaker and wears out sooner.
Is top-grain leather real leather?
Yes, but its surface has been sanded and coated. It's more uniform than full-grain but less durable, and it doesn't develop a patina.
Why does full-grain leather have marks?
Small marks and visible pores come from the animal's natural skin. They show the surface hasn't been sanded away.
Does full-grain leather crack in the heat?
Not if it's cared for. Keep it out of hot cars and condition it every two to three months. Our UAE leather care guide has the details.
